The men in front of the Finch house are largely Atticus's friends. People like Sherriff Heck Tate and Mr. Link Deas are concerned about Tom Robinson's safety in prison. The mob in front of the jailhouse is intimidating and aggressive. They want to take justice in their own hands and lynch Tom. It looks as if they are even threatening Atticus until Scout comes and diffuses the situation.
