Although Atticus doesn't have a lot of money, they still have a descent house, food on the table and enough money for necessities. Atticus was frequently paid in food because people simply could not afford to pay him with money. The Ewell's live in abject poverty while the Cunninghams live in near poverty but somehow get by.
