why would it be important to have inagination living and travelling in a harsh climate? what other characteristics or qualities does the man have? how are these demonstrated?

This is one of my all time favorite stories. What it takes to travel in this harsh climate is knowledge and experience. The man in this story is neither. I am going to link my own summary of this story below. I could cut and paste it, but I think this is the easier way.
