To Build a Fire

London writes, "He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only on the things, and not in the significances". What does this tell us about the man? What is his character like?

Through this quote London tells us that the man isn't ignorant or foolish, that he has great understanding of the things around him, but that he also refuses to apply his knowledge to the danger of his own situation. The man is full of pride and hubris which cloud his judgment. He lacks the "imagination" to consider what nature can do when she is not respected.
