Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)

Why do you think the writer tells so many stories about towing? How do they help in the progress of the plot and explaining human foibles?

Towing boats takes expertise and these guys have none. Much of the humour in this book is mined from their goodnatured ineptness trying to pull off manoeuvres they can't do.
