"what use is george there, and what's the good of their banks ." remarks harris. what makes harris speak against george and the whole banking system?

Jerome is going on a rant about George as they pull the heavy boat. He refelects that George always gives the excuse of working at his bank rather than helping out. Jerome questions what George does in the bank,

"He sits behind a bit of glass all day trying to look as if he was doing something."

Jerome then complains about banks and how they take your money and offer little in return.
