Okonkwo was an insecure man. He used masculine bravado to hide behind his massive insecurities. Okonkwo craved love and acceptance through constantly having to prove himself to other people as some hyper-masculine stoic warrior. In reality he was always afraid of being exposed as emotionally insecure.
