They don't leave the "muck" (everglades) when the season in over because they've made friends and enjoy it there. Also, Tea Cake gets away with his abusive treatment towards his wife in the little community they've joined. People actually envy the fact that he can beat his wife. It's a bit disconcerting, but it's true.
