I would agree. The dramatic setting of Whangara in both the novel and the film add a beauty to the narrative, coupled with a primitive rawness which permeates the text.

Just as the whales have their code and way of living, sometimes in harmony, sometimes on opposition, with their environment and history, so do the Maori.
