What did Byron tell Joey in order for her to not complain about wearing layers anymore?

Byron told her that the reason Mama made them wear so many layers was to keep them from freezing..... that because she was from the South..... half her blood was real thin. Thus, is she didn't dress warmly enough she might freeze and get thrown into a garbage truck with all the other frozen, dead people they cleaned off the street every morning. ;-)
