The reader has to feel for Lila and Hari, the eldest children in the family. They are forced to take care of heir two younger sisters, a mother and a father. The family is in a desperate state. The mother is sick and needs caring for all the time. The father is a drunkard wo does not bring in enough money. Both children must sacrifice their own childhood for the family to survive. Lila must run the household and Hari, who is only twelve, must go to the big city of Mumbai to make a little money. Through the novel we just hope that Lila and Hari can have a better situation for both themselves and their family.
