Why did the family get money from the De Silvas?

when the De Silvas had arrived to Thul, the importance of it to the family was they could afford money... How did the family afford money?

Mr. De Silva pays Lila and her sisters for their work around the house, so Lila can earn money while her parents are gone. He also gave her father money for food while he stayed with Mama at the hospital and paid for Mama's medicine.
