The Things They Carried

Why does O'Brien use intentional repetition of phrases, people's names and identigying details and peices of equipment in "The Things They Carried?"

What effect do you think he hopes to achieve through such repetition? Is he successful?

I believe he intends the reader to remember and understand. It is very easy to take characters out of context and lump them together when you're taling about battles and warfare. Repetition of names, phrases, and tools makes them individuals.
