Tranio makes up a story that the Pedant owes him. He concocts a story about the dukes of Mantua and Padua fighting and that anybody crossing into Padua from Matua will be killed. He says, in exchange for protection, that he needs somebody to play his (Lucentio’s father) and claims the old man looks like him anyway.
