Explain why petruchio was so mean and horrible to kate when they first got married and why was this method of "taming" successful

He wanted to prove to everyone that Kate can be tamed. He felt that if he can be domineering and excessively mean, he could "break" her early on. Then he would be nice to her and Kate would be a grateful submissive wife. It really wasn't that successful actually.
