What is symbolic about the final kiss Pearl and Dimmesdale share?

What symbol(s) are revealed when Pearl accepts Dimmsdale and kisses him before he dies? Why does she finally accept him?

This means that Dimmesdale has finally "manned up" to being Pearl's father. Pearl is no longer as ashamed of him. Dimmesdale finally has a connection with Pearl even though his death is near.
