I actually read Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" first. So I kept thinking back to that play. Certainly the Puritans were not a fun bunch of people. They seem a perfect example of following religious dogma with little intelligent thought. The range of human emotions, desires and transgressions were dealt with in a very unnatural way. Hypocrisy and vindictiveness hence came easy to these people.
