Of what ceremony in England was the Election Day pageantry a pale imitation?

The pagentry in England was called "Mothering Sunday." It was held during the fourth Sunday of Lent and was meant to honor all mothers. The connection with the Scarlet Letter is full of situational irony. Hawthorne changes the title of the day to Election Day but the irony is not lost on people aware of "mothering Sunday".
