This really depends on which character you choose. Lets consider the obvious, Hester and her Scarlet Letter. Hester bears this letter with a humble patience. She, however, also uses it to mould her own independence and strength of character. She never reveals Dimmesdale and goes about her life with a sense of self-awareness that Puritans can't comprehend.
