The Scarlet Letter

Can you please tell where the scaffold is in correlation to the church and meeting house?

There is a quote that says “It stood nearly beneath the eaves of Boston’s earliest church, and appeared to be a fixture there”… (53). I dont know if that it describing the scaffold or something else? Is it saying that the chruch's roof is hanging over the scaffold. Also there is another quote that says that the balcony of the meeting house is over the scaffold. So I am really confused to what direction are the meeting house and the church are facing? Please help!!

In context:

Hester Prynne passed through this portion of her ordeal, and came to a sort of scaffold, at the western extremity of the market-place. It stood nearly beneath the eaves of Boston's earliest church, and appeared to be a fixture there.
