The Rocking-Horse Winner

The initial assumptions of the story are (a) a boy might get divinatory powers by riding a rocking horse, (b) a house can whisper. Could the second of these be accepted as more than a metaphor? Once we have granted these initial assumptions,

does the story develop plausibly?

(b) a house can whisper.

The whispers of the house are reflected in the thoughts of the mind.
