Child Interrupted in "The Rocking-Horse Winner" and "The Found Boat" College

In short fictions “The Rocking Horse Winner” and “The Found Boat”, children are interrupted in both stories. While one takes place in England and another in Canada, some similarities still exist in the plots. Moreover, the fact that symbolic meaning–the rocking horse in "The Rocking-Horse Winner" and the found boat in "The Found Boat"–are found in both stories is crucial for our understanding toward the plot. In this essay, we will argue about questions of similar elements that found in both stories.

In "The Rocking-Horse Winner", Paul dies because of his struggle for her mother’s endless desire for money. While in "The Found Boat", Eva feels painful for Clayton’s attitude toward their previous behavior. “And yet the voices in the house, behind the sprays of mimosa and almond blossom…...More than ever!”(Lawrence 82) As described in the story, Paul is frightened by this sort of illusion, and this is the very reason of his insanity. What is more, Paul also suffers from the financial stress that is not common to be seen on child in such age. Considering that this kind of stress can even kills a grown man, we could not expect that Paul, a boy who is only 12 or so, can tolerate such desperation.
