The Road

"The blackened shapes of rock standing up out of the shoals of ash and billows of ash blowing downcountry through the waste" why do you think McCarthy uses the imagery of the ocean to describe the landscape?

I think McCarthy is trying to convey the empty berrenness of the landscape. Much llike being in the sea, there is a sense of nothingness around the man and boy. Even walking on land feels like they are drifting through a sea of nothingness.
