what is the role of the crew in the story ?

Well, they don't too directly influence the action but they do reprimand the mariner after killing the albatross causes them trouble. Though they end up trading him off for their own safety, they ultimately all end up dead. They are just as important for ultimately dying off and leaving the Mariner alone as they are for any actions they take.
