The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

In lines 36-40, and even in 13-16, why does the Wedding Guest sit and listen to the Mariner’s story rather than joining the wedding party?

From the text, we can infer that the Wedding Guest is drawn in by the mariner himself.... the look in his eye.... his demeanor. He has no choice but to listen. The Wedding Guest was mesmerized by the old man's eyes.... betwitched.
