The Romantic Period was a perfect forge for the manufacture of a poem such as 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' Written at the time of great scientific, social, cultural and political innovation, the poem is part of Coleridge's desire (and that of his fellow writer William Wordsworth) to make poetry more accessible to the people. Coleridge was using a combination of his rich imagination and description coupled with real emotion and characterisation to create poetry that was engaging to a wide audience, simple in language but complex in feeling.
