In Chapter 7, Crane writes "He threw a pinecone at a jovial squirrel, and he [the squirrel] ran with chattering fear."

In Chapter 7, Crane writes "He threw a pinecone at a jovial squirrel, and he [the squirrel] ran with chattering fear." What telling event had just happened before this scene? Why did Henry feel relief when the squirrel ran up into the tree to escape the threat?

Henry had just run from battle. The squirrel running away comforted Henry. At the sound of danger, the Squirrel too ran. Nature shows that running is the natural thing to do when faced with danger. It is unnatural to stay and face danger.
