Your anwer is definitely possible, though mine is a bit different. Another change that impacted Charlie was the relationship between Brad and Patrick. After the Brad's father caught the boys in a compromising situation, their relationship ended, but it also brought about a "new" Brad. Brad suddenly took to making very loud and outspoken comments about homosexuality.... fights break out, and even Charlie gets involved. It is this occurrence helps initiate Charlie's new relationship with Sam... it's a game changer.
