Did Charlie choose his destiny, or was he fated to become the person he is at the end of the novel ?

I think one of the themes is that Charlie chooses his own destiny. Carlie begins to realize that he is not defined by his past of by how he is viewed in high school. Charlie's destiny does not begin and end in his angst ridden teen years.
