Why do you think Santiago keeps thinking and dreaming of the lion's in Africa?

I simply do not understand stand it. Any good explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Santiago remembers his younger self when he was vital and strong. The lions in Africa are a metaphor for his lost majesty and strength.
