The sharks are "unworthy" opponents. They take what is not theirs, "They took about forty pounds." Even though the sharks take from Santiago, they cannot take away from his achievement. For Santiago the loss of his marlin does is not diminish his honour. The shark's "victory" is only a personification of what they do naturally. Santiago has still found redemption.
