The Old Man and The Sea is a symbolic Novel?

There are many examples of symbolism in the novella. These include; the marlin (Santiago's alter-ego); the dreams of lions (Santiago's lost youth); the sharks (destructive elements in nature); the mast (symbolic of the cross); and Santiago himself (Christ figure).
