Santiago is headstrong. He is used to the mocking of the young. Beyond this, Santiago is in love with the sea, The sea is his mistress, it is a mythical construct that the others do not understand. Every creature has its place in Santiago's world. The fish are more than a business to him, they are part of his universe. The others interpret this as crazy.
