I think Martin has a soft spot for Santiago. Unlike the other fishermen he does not seem to make fun of him. He sends food with Manolin to give to the old man when he returns from his journey.

I believe at one point Santiago says of Martin, "Martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid."
