why did Athena make Okysseus' cloak white? What is the significance of the color white?

White is typically a color that symbolizes purity.  Odysseus' quest to reclaim his home and his wife and family is motivated by the pure motive of love and family togetherness.  White is also the opposite of black (obviously), so it is the color that is showing that good should triumph over the evil of the suitors.
