Most of all, I think this encounter between Odysseus' army and the Cicones represents Western values that have not yet been influenced by the Judeo-Christian tradition. Instead of believing in any sort of compassion or charity, Greek "goods" are distinctly masculine: namely, strength, domination, and conquering.
