He concludes his poetry will never be as good because he doesn't truly know himself. His family draws a line between them and other blacks, meaning he doesn't know his culture and he can't be a true black artist because of it. How can you write about something you've never experienced or no one close to you has never experienced. He can't indulge in the culture or thrive in writing about it because he has been blocked off from it. He has always seen himself some what equalvilent to whites, so therefore he has no real experiences ot write about. During this time many lacks were mistreated and abused for the color of their skin. He can't wite about the times and whats going on because he hasn't been mistreated or abused. His family mingles with the people that do the abusing. It's also fair to say that his family were also the racist, and abusers. They looked down on people who were darker than them and "uncivilized", because having darker skin was an automatic sign that you were less than and they viewed themselves as more. They didn't want to be intertwined with blacks that were darker out of fear of being inferiror. This all effects his writing essentially because he doesn't know who he really is, his culture, etc.
