Mathilde's husband is content and happy to live a comfortable life. Mathilde wants and believes herself entitled to a life of luxury.

Mathild is unhappy with whatever she has She only cares about status. She always dreams to be rich and to marry a millionaire. She thinks that she was born to a social high class but turns out she was in the middle class and she was married to a clerk. On the other hand, Loisel's husband is happy with what he has. He cares about his family and has huge adulation towards his wife.
