Basically Mathilde and her husband go into debt. They lose their house, their maid... they lose everything. Of course, by the end of the story, they discover the original necklace was merely a fake. After ten years of hard work, Madame Loisel is more realistic about herself and her identity. She learns the value of hard work and discovers she can be proud of what she can achieve from that hard work. She no longer dreams about being somebody that she is not.
