What evidence can be found in the story to support the idea that humans’ animalistic impulses are not far below their civilized exteriors?

Zaroff seems to have an instinct for hunting. He feels compelled to kill anything that walks. Certainly Rainsford feels the instinct to preserve himself, like animals, when he is being hunted.
