The main theme of the novel is that one should never attempt to interfere with destiny or fate. This is illustrated when the Whites randomly make their three wishes without forethought or caution in the way they ask...... or how those wishes will be granted. The results, of course, are tragic, and Mr. and Mrs. White use two of their wishes in order to undo the first wish they were granted with results that are just as disastrous.
