Mr. Tulliver's death is directly related to the emotional upheaval of his finances, and his inability to cope with what he cannot understand. Tom and Maggie's relationship has actually been torn apart by the stress; they haven't come together as a family, and the differences in their personalities became apparent.

After their father's death, Tom and Maggie put aside their differences and each seek forgiveness from the other in their grief. Later, they will once again find themselves at odds due to her love for Philip.
