Thomas proves to be brave, loyal, and clever, with isolated telepathic powers and a very limited memory of previous knowledge of the Maze. Soon after arriving in the Glade, Thomas makes both friends and enemies and proves a leader among the boys. From the very first moment that Thomas arrived in the Glade he had only one thing on his mind – to escape and return to whatever his life was before his arrival. Thomas is a very bright young man who proves to be as brave as he is smart. He immediately has a strong, internal desire to become a Runner. But, it’s unheard of for a Newbie like Thomas to become a Runner. The boys who are Runners are in top shape and must run each day in the Maze – an eerie no-exit arm of the Glade – in an effort to find a way out. It is a dangerous job to have. The Grievers dwell in the Maze. The young boys of the Glade are their prey. Grievers are huge bulbous entities who hunt the boys and either inject them with poison or take them away. No one knows the eventual fate of the boys. But, Thomas is persistent and soon becomes a Runner.
