In Chapter Five, Susan and her daughter discover that Michael is now the mayor of the town. Although, Elizabeth-Jane doesn't know that Michael is her father, her mother becomes somewhat agitated after seeing Michael dressed in his finery and learning that he no longer drinks. Michael is no longer the man she left behind.
