Describe the theme of the Mayor of Casterbridge ?

There are a few themes you might consider. I am partial to "the importance of a man's character".  Michael Henchard has his flaws, like his temper, but he generally conducts himself honor. He is stripped of his titles and property but somehow remains morally righteous to his death.
