The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson, follows the story of Frodo Baggins, a hobbit that has embarked on a journey with a fellowship of eight to destroy the One Ring that holds the power to control all of Middle-Earth. Frodo faces much opposition on his quest as the Dark Lord Sauron hunts for his lost ring of power. The ring causes many problems for the fellowship because it holds the power to draw people in and to bring out the worst in them. This is especially true of Boromir, a member of the fellowship, as he attempts to steal the ring from Frodo in order to save his kingdom Gondor. This scene shows not only the temptation of power, but also the strength and persistence needed to be honorable and heroic.

Firstly, it is important to note the power the ring has over both Boromir and Frodo. It has control over everyone and no one is exempt from its power. Its power is expressed by the juxtaposition of Boromir’s obsession and Frodo’s resilience. As the two confront each other over the future of the ring, it whispers in the background, calling for one of them to act on their impulses.
