The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Lewis writes that " deep down inside him he really knew that the White Witch was bad and cruel" Why did Edmund try to convince himself that the Witch wasn't all that bad?

Edmund felt isolated from his brother and sisters. He was finally getting the kind of attention that he thinks he deserved from the White Witch. He also really wants that Turkish Delight.
