Why did Hosseini choose to make Sohrab so reserved and disconnected? Why not just have him warm up to Amir and Soraya?

Sohrab has been separated from his parents. they have also been executed. To make matters worse, he was sexually abused by the same guy (Assef) who abused his father. It is a wonder that he is able to trust anybody.
