For Amir, how is "returning to Kabul... like running into an old, forgotten friend and seeing that life hadn't been good to him..."

can it have citations on the answer of this questions?

This is when Amir returns to Kabul to bring Sohrab to America.  Hosseini  uses simile to explain how his old neighborhood has disintegrated under the Taliban. Kabul is personified as an old friend who has changed for the worse.
