In Chapter Five, Rules of the Game, we see a division building between Waverly and her mother. Waverly is immensely successful at whatever she puts her mind to, and she resents her mother's bragging..... it's almost as if her mother is taking credit for her success, something that Waverly resents. This resentment escalates, and is eventually responsible for Waverly leaving home. Their mother/daughter relationship is distant.
